Canal Front vs. River Front: Why We Chose the Canal

Sometimes the Best View Isn’t the One Everyone Else Is Chasing

Deschutes Riverfront Homes

When we first started searching for a short-term rental in Central Oregon, I was convinced we needed a riverfront property.

After all, if you’re buying a vacation home in one of the country’s most beautiful outdoor destinations, isn’t riverfront the dream?

That’s certainly what I thought.

Apparently, so did everyone else.

Riverfront homes were stunning, but they also came with higher price tags, stronger competition, and far fewer options. Every time a great property hit the market, it seemed to disappear almost immediately.

But as we continued our search, something unexpected happened.

We started looking at canal-front homes.

At first, I viewed them as the “runner-up”—the compromise if we couldn’t find the perfect riverfront property.

I couldn’t have been more wrong.

Looking Beyond the View

There’s no denying that riverfront homes offer spectacular scenery.

But eventually, we stopped asking which property had the prettiest view.

Instead, we asked a much better question:

“What kind of experience will our guests actually have?”

That simple shift changed everything.

Many riverfront homes have steep banks that make accessing the water difficult. Others sit along faster-moving sections of the river, making them less inviting for young children or inexperienced paddlers.

Beautiful?

Absolutely.

Practical for every guest?

Not always.

Then We Walked Out the Back Door

The moment we stepped onto the deck at our future cabin, everything clicked.

There it was.

The canal.

Calm.

Peaceful.

Inviting.

Instead of rushing water, we saw a quiet place where families could launch a kayak, paddleboard, or tube directly from the private dock.

Children could watch ducks glide across the water.

Guests could sip their morning coffee while deer wandered along the opposite bank.

The atmosphere felt completely different.

Not necessarily better.

Just different.

And for the kind of vacation experience we wanted to create, different was exactly right.

The Canal Became Part of the Adventure

One of the biggest surprises was discovering that the canal isn’t separate from the Deschutes River—it connects directly to it.

Guests can launch from the private dock, paddle through the peaceful canal, and access the river without ever loading a kayak onto a vehicle.

That convenience became one of our favorite features.

Visitors get the serenity of calm water outside their back door while still having easy access to the adventure of the Deschutes River.

It truly offers the best of both worlds.

Families Experience Waterfront Differently

As we researched successful vacation rentals, one lesson kept surfacing.

Families aren’t simply looking for the biggest house or the most impressive view.

They’re looking for experiences they’ll remember.

Can the kids safely fish from the dock?

Can everyone paddle together?

Is there room to gather around the fire table after a day on the water?

Can grandparents relax nearby while the kids explore?

Our canal-front property answered “yes” to every one of those questions.

A Different Kind of Waterfront

Today, people occasionally ask if I wish we’d purchased a riverfront home instead.

My answer is always the same.

No.

The canal has become one of my favorite features of the property.

It’s peaceful.

It’s scenic.

It’s easy to enjoy.

And it’s become part of what makes The Cabin on the Canal unique.

Sometimes the obvious choice isn’t the right one.

Sometimes the property you almost overlooked turns out to be exactly what you were searching for.

What We Learned

  • Riverfront isn’t automatically the better investment.
  • Think about the guest experience, not just the view.
  • Calm water creates opportunities for more guests to enjoy it.
  • Private dock access became one of our favorite amenities.
  • The memories you help guests create are often more valuable than the marketing buzzwords that sell a property.
